SOLVING THE PROBLEM OF ACADEMIC PERFOMANCE

successAnd the Lord shall make thee the head and not the tail; and thou shall be above and not beneath; IF thou shall hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy god, which I command thee this, to observe and to do them.

This is the promise of the Lord to us his children. God desires us to be the head and not the tail. The head is

H Honored

E Excelling

A Above only and

D Distinctive

The Lord says He”ll make us Honored , Excellent, Above only and Distinctive

but He attaches a condition to the promise: “if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the lord thy God, which I command thee to observe and to do them.” In order for us to solve the problems of poor academic performance in our studies, we must know the commandments and then observe and do them.

CAUSES OF POOR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AMONG STUDENTS

The Bible makes us to understands that whatever a man sows, he will reap (Gal 6:7) Therefore we will point out the causes of poor academic performance.

Some of the causes of poor performance are:

  • Lack of decision and determination to study and succeed

  • Lack of diligence in study

  • Indiscipline

  • Pride

  • Not attending lecture/tutorials

  • Not taking notes

  • Disrespecting constituted authorities

  • Laziness

  • Sin

  • Fear

  • Anger

  • Impatience

  • Lack

  • Prayerlessness

Consideration of perceptions and attitudes that determine our performance and success “as a man thinks in his heart, so is he” pro 23:7. It is important to know that our thoughts are the seeds we subconsciously or consciously sow into our lives that form habit patterns that would determine our performance in any aspect of our lives

we are considering that underlying perceptions and thoughts patterns that make us develop some attitudes that cause good or poor performance in academics and in life in general among students

John Maxwell in his book titled “Thinking for a change” explained how habits and behaviors are developed. He said:

Our thinking creates our Belief which creates our Expectation which then create our Attitude which creates our Behavior which then determines our Performance which creates our Life

THOUGHT˃˃˃˃˃BELIEF˃˃˃˃EXPECTATION˃˃˃˃ATTITUDE˃˃˃˃BEHAVIOR˃˃˃˃PERFOMANCE˃˃˃˃˃LIFE

we then see that a lot of things lead to our performance; and how good our performance is would be how good our life would be. Therefore the root cause is our thoughts. Our thoughts develop to become our beliefs and then our beliefs make us have some kind of expectation. Our expectation determine our attitudes (positive or negative) and then make us behave in some ways which we call habits. As we continue in such habits (or behaviors), we would have a particular type of performance because our habits are actions we put in bit by bit until they become part of us and difficult to break.

Our habits start from an IT to BIT and then to HABIT.

This means that a Habit is an action one carries out bit by bit until it becomes part of him and he does not need consciously think about it before doing it.

Our habits are formed in the following ways:

  • Our Habits are developed basically from our THOUGHTS

  • The source of such thought might be Fear or Faith

  • When a Thought develops in our hearts and minds, it creates an Emotion (a strong feeling that could make us retain that thought)

  • The Emotion could be Positive or Negative, depending on the type of Thought

we then take action on what we thought about

  • Our continual action on our Thoughts create stronger Emotions (thoughts or feelings) that would attach us to such actions

  • With repeated Action, it then passes our conscious mind to subconscious mind to enable us do it without being aware (ie conscious of it)

  • Usually before a thought turns to a Habit, Psychologists tell us that we must have meditated on such thought and acted on it consistently for a period of about 3 weeks ie 21 days.

How wonderful then it would be to develop good habits, so that success and excellence would be achieved with greater speed by using the simple, yet effective power of Good Habits.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10)

The secret of your future is found in your daily routine” Mike Murdock
